Synthetic vs. Human Hair: Which Is Best?

Although I have a fabulous curly natural coif, I love to experiment with weaves, wigs and extensions. Until recently, however, my weave world was limited to human hair.

All that changed last Saturday. As I was thumbing through magazines looking for inspiration, I stumbled upon a picture of a lush curly hairstyle that was created using synthetic hair. My immediate reaction was shock because it seems like now-a-days everyone uses Remy hair and 100% human hair imported from India, Malaysia and Italy.
Needless to say, my curiosity was piqued so I sent a text to one of my weave-connoisseur friends posing the question: “How do you feel about using synthetic hair?”
“Ew! Don’t use that,” she responded. “I have used synthetic hair in the past, but I prefer human hair because it looks and feels more natural.”
While that opinion is shared by many, I believe a large part of the hair experience is how you take care of your weave and wigs, not necessarily whether they are made of synthetic or human hair.

Team Human Hair

Celebrity hairstylist Amoy Pitters shared similar sentiments with my friend on synthetic hair being an “absolute no-no,” and she says she only uses imported human hair on her clients.
Imported human hair can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars and with proper care (cleansing, wearing heat protectant when using heat and nurturing the hair like it’s your own), this hair could last for up to a year. But for some of the more frugal beauties, human hair from a local beauty supply store is the next-best-thing.
There are many shoppers who stray from using synthetic hair because they want the luxury of hair that looks and feels more natural to them. However, anti-synthetic hair weave wearers should know there are loopholes in how human hair labeled.
“People get confused and think that as long as a brand of hair has some type of human hair in it, they can say on the package 100% human hair,” Amoy says. “You should do your research because they could mix that hair with a synthetic blend.” This was especially fascinating to me because some of my friends who swear off synthetic hair, wear it without even knowing it.

Team Synthetic Hair

Celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen said she uses human hair on her clients but has no problem using synthetic hair from time to time, especially curly textures.
“The best curly hair comes in synthetic form,” says Ursula. “Wearing a synthetic wig is a good investment in between weaves because it helps cut the cost of you spending so much money on your hair.”
There are styling limitations to using synthetic hair so it’s important to be conscious of the amount of heat that’s applied. You also can’t brush it too much. “Heated rollers are great for styling and you should wash the hair in warm water and let it air dry,” Ursula says.
I’m open to using either hair texture depending on the style that I want and the amount of care that I’m willing to dedicate to maintenance. I know that my synthetic hair needs a little oil sheen and good paddle brush to help me tame curls and I know that for bouncy human hair I should stray from heavy oils and let it flow. In my opinion, all is fair in wigs and weave.

What’s your take on the human hair vs. synthetic hair debate? Do you prefer one over the other?

1.What is your name ?

My name is Rhonda ray

2.Where are you from?

I was born & raised in Los Angeles, Ca

3. Why as an artist have you decided to promote the natural lifestyle?

As an artist it was easy for me to promote the natural lifestyle because that's a part of who I am and something that I chose for myself over 10 years ago.So it comes out in everything I do including my music, my art and my writing.  So it's not so much me promoting as me just being who I am.  Although I would advocate the lifestyle to anyone. I think it's a beautiful thing and I want people to see that in my music presentation. I wanted to show the world how beautiful black women are naturally and that's why I wrote the web series "Afro City" that features black women with natural hair.  You can check that project out at http://www.AfroCitytv.com.

4.How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as bohemian meets trendy with an Afrocentric flare.  I like to mix the old with the new and experiment by mixing different pieces to
create my own look. I call it Afro Chic.

5.What are some people that inspire you most?

I'm inspired by music, art and life. I can hear a song and get inspired.  I can see a painting and get really in spire or just my hearing someone tell their story.  Musically I'm inspired by artist like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, the roots, Anthony Hamilton, India Aire, Lauren Hill, Beyonce, Alicia Keyes, Amy Whinehouse and the new artist Adele.

6.What the general mission of your music?

The general mission of my music is to inspire all who listen in a positive way. I hope that by listening to my music some can relate, learn and just enjoy by listening. I especially would like to inspire young girls.

7. What are some of the accomplishments and describe in detail some of your most recent performances?

Some of my accomplishments are becoming a professional photographer and painter.  I love taking photos of people and things and and expressing myself on canvas with paint.  I also started a live talk show called "Afronistas" that airs every Sunday from 1:00 to 2:00 PST 4:00 to 5:00 pm Eastern time on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/afronistas I am currently working on putting together a new band to perform my music around Los Angeles and looking forward to taking the show to other big cities. So I'm very excited about accomplishing that.

8.Where can we find your music?

You can find my music at http://www.RhondaRay.net and on http://www.AfroCitytv.com

9.What advice would you give to others who wanted to go natural or live a more natural based lifestyle?

I would say to anyone thinking about going natural to look at other natural women and talk to other natural women with your similar look and hair texture and choose a hairstyle you like and start from there.  Once you get the hang of it it's just as easy if not easier to maintain as your previous hair regimes.  There is tons of information to go through on the internet...just Google any question you have.  I say take small steps at a time and you're be a natural at in no time.  And that's with hair, eating habits and lifestyle. The journey can be fun and very creative.

10.What’s your favorite quote?

One of my favorite quotes is "Success is nothing more than a few disciplines...practiced everyday" by Jim Rohn

PLEASE GO AND CHECK OUT MS RAY!!! SHE IS DEFINITELY SOMEONE TO LOOK OUT FOR!!!:)!!!

Real People Real Answers

 What’s your name?

Brandi Marie Kissel
 How old are you?

I am 24 years old.
 Where are you from?

I grew up in a small town in Vermont but live in Southern Florida now.

 What is your occupation?

I work at a Water Treatment Plant, real glamorous!

 How would you describe yourself?

I have always been someone who stands out and kinda does my own thing. Unique maybe?

When did you first decide to become natural?

I've been natural since the day I was born. No chemicals have touched my hair and NEVER will.
If there was one word to describe your style what would it be?

If I like something, I wear it. Anything! I just try to be as ME as I can be.
Who are some people that inspire you the most?

My mother has always been the person who told me to be myself and she's the main reason I have basically had an afro since I was a kid. Growing up as a mixed child, I never really "fit" in. So she made sure I knew I was special and to just be me.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I have no plans to grow up!

What advice would you give to others who wanted to go natural or live a more natural based lifestyle?

There really is nothing better that a woman can do for herself I think. I mean I am not a "hair role model" but I hope that me always being natural might inspire more to do it!
 What’s your favorite quote?

I am my hair and my hair is awesome!

HOME REMEDIES FOR A SUMMER COLD.. YEP SUMMER COLDS SUCK!!! YEP I SAID IT!!

Since I have been blessed with a total of TWO wonderful summer colds. I thought it may be fitting to find some relief that can help us all fight the battle of the summer sniffles. I have a couple of natural herbs that have helped me after about 3 days...and general this that can everyone listed below:)!!

1)

Humidifier

If you live in a dry climate, the dryness of the air, coupled with a bad summer cold, can leave your throat feeling raw and sore. Placing a humidifier in your bedroom at night can help moisturize the air and give you better sleep at night.

2)

Fluids

Fluids are an important part of any cold remedy, but it's especially important to stay hydrated when you're suffering from a summer cold. The heat and dryness can deplete your body of moisture, so make sure to drink enough water, juice or sports drinks to feel better.

3)

Vitamin C and ZINC

Vitamin C has long been utilized as a natural remedy for cold symptoms, and is thought to help shorten the length of the common cold. Through the summer months, you can easily get the vitamin C from the various fruits and vegetables that are in season. Zinc has also said to help shorten the duration of the common cold.

4)
NATURAL HERBS

Echinacea , Licorice root and Fungreek ( all found at your local vitamin store) Have been said to help with many respiratory infections .

SO for all you summer cold suffers like me here are some things that may help ease the summer cold blues:)
